The dirt road story begins..

My name is Edward E. Englett Sr. I began my career with the Douglas County Georgia Sheriff’s Department in February 1979. I would work continually for Douglas County for 38 years and retired in 2017.

I began as a Radio Operator where I received a lot of accolades from my peers. After 6 months and in the summer of 1979, I was promoted to a Jailer position that offered more pay and new responsibilities.

After two years as a Jailer, and in the summer of 1981, I was finally placed on a Patrol Shift. I received Field Training from my new day shift Sergeant Eddie P. (RIP)

My field training would last for two weeks and then I was released on patrol as a sworn Deputy Sheriff. In my stories you will understand why only two weeks of training was required in my case. I remained on my day patrol shift until the summer of 1985. Then I was chosen to be a member of the new “Traffic Enforcement Unit.” When the Government Grant ran out on the traffic unit in the summer of 1988, I was given the responsibility to apply for another three-year Grant from the Feds and State.

After my efforts rewarded Douglas County with another three-year Grant in the summer of 1988, I was promoted to Sergeant as Sgt. Ron C (RIP) was promoted to lieutenant of our newly granted “D.U.I. Task Force.”

I remained on the DUI Task Force until Sheriff Lee retired in 1992. Sheriff T. Waldrop was elected to be Sheriff of Douglas County Georgia in 1992. When the new sheriff came to power in January 1993, I saw the writing on the wall and decided to find another job within the department from the DUI Unit. But that is another story.

In the fall of 1993, I requested and was accepted, to fill a non-supervisory deputy position in Court Services. I gave up my take home car along with my sergeant’s pay and stripes. In 1998 the “New” Courthouse opened on Hospital Drive, and I received a promotion to Sergeant of Court Services. In 2010 I was promoted to Lieutenant of the Court Services Division.

I retired from Court Services and Law Enforcement in the summer of 2017 with a little more than 38 years of service.
